My Abbreviated Collecting Story
My path as a picker started when I was very young. I was always inclined toward collecting objects often visiting the attic at my grandparents house, basement, attic and at their cottage, seeing all the old artifacts and history that they felt treasured enough to retain. I have a like minded cousin Joyce who was also of a similar bent who also shared an interest and appreciation of the objects that contributed to out family history. To this day we still share stories of our recent thrift scores. I have another cousin Hank, whom I call “uncle” and his wife Iris who are still amassing a great collection of objects they find useful and interesting. It is often one of my greatest joys to visit them on trips back to Michigan and see what the latest find is to add to the decoration of their home.
I have for most of my life really enjoyed going to flea markets, thrift stores, garage sales antique malls and markets. So too, do some of my children and their spouses. I try to visit places such as often as I can whenever I travel to other cities and states.
Hope for the future
A hope for the future would be to open a museum in Detroit or one of the affordable surrounding suburbs. This would be a way to give back to this Glorious city. A museum for common folk with ordinary or extraordinary interests. Beer Cans, Bottle Caps, Ashtrays, Insects, Teacups, natural historical objects and seashells. Things out of the realm of Fine art. We have the DIA and the Detroit Historical museum for rare and priceless objects.
